When a painting was made by an artist centuries ago, it was an object that was fabricated by skilled experienced craftsmen who dedicated their entire lives to one particular aspect of the work. They were wood carvers, gilders, pigment grinders and painters. A painting like this may still be in excellent condition six centuries later because it was well made.
